GFMD States Process
GFMD 2011 (States)
Now in its fifth year, the Chair-in-Office for 2011 is Switzerland. The work program of the states for GFMD 2011 is articulated in the concept paper developed by the Swiss Chair. The central theme of the States’ program is: Taking Action on Migration and Development: Coherence, Capacity and Cooperation.
GFMD 2011 Themes (States)
The thematic program of the states is structured around three thematic clusters, two of which are broken down further into subthemes:
I. Labour migration and development
- Engaging the private sector in labour market planning,
- Lowering the cost of migration for higher development gains,
- Global care workers at the interface of migration and development
II. Addressing irregular migration through coherent migration and development strategies
III. Tools for evidence-based migration and development policies
- Impact Assessments of Migration and Development Policies
- Mainstreaming Migration into Development Planning
- Migration Profiles
GFMD 2011 Format (States)
Building significantly upon the basictemplate of GFMD processes in previous years, which revolved around a large annual convening of civil society and States’,the Swiss Chair proposed this year to
(co-)organize with states and other actors an additonal number of smaller, focused and action-oriented meetings around the world: to tap into the concrete experiences of practitioners on the ground, explore some of the practical applications of GFMD discussions, and promote concrete follow-up and action between the larger annual meetings. Within the framework of the states program of this year’s GFMD, the Swiss chair intends to draw together the results and outcomes of these meetings during the annual meeting of states on 1 and 2 December, this year called the “Concluding debate”.
Reports, background papers, participant lists and contact details for these thematic meetings, as well as more information can be found on the GFMD website: www.gfmd.org.
